Michael Carl Raines

Dr. Michael Raines is an Instructional Associate Professor of TESL in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi. He is the Graduate Program Coordinator for the Applied Linguistics emphasis for the Ph.D. in Second Language Studies.

Research Interests

Dr. Raines' research interests include Grammar, Dialects, Bilingualism, Multiculturalism, Mexican dialect and culture, and Culture.

Biography

Originally from Tupelo, MS, Dr. Michael Raines has been teaching for many years. He studied and taught in Mexico City for a number of years, and after that experience, returned to the United States to finish his Ph.D. in TESOL at Ole Miss. After finishing his degree, he taught at the University of Alabama for several years, where he served as director of two programs: the ESL and the Foreign Language Education programs, and also managed a federal grant. He has taught additional intensive TESL classes abroad.

After his tenure at the University of Alabama, Michael returned to Ole Miss to teach Spanish and ESL for a number of years. In the fall 2010 semester, he began teaching in the TESL and Intensive English programs  and also teaches a number of on-line courses for iStudy. After the pandemic, he moved from the IEP to Modern Languages and currently teaches applied linguistics courses for both the M.A. and Ph.D. in Second Language Studies programs, serving on a number of theses and dissertation committees. Michael also serves as the Co-Graduate Program Coordinator for the Ph.D. in Second Language Studies Program.
