The Department of Modern Languages develops high language proficiencies in its students and is committed to undergirding language programs with sound linguistic and pedagogical principles. Equally important in the Department are the study of literature, cinema, and culture.

Studying Modern Languages

We are proud of our outstanding faculty, strong tradition of scholarship, and dedication to teaching. The Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi develops in its students high language proficiencies and is committed to undergirding our language programs with sound linguistic and pedagogical principles, as delivered by its programs in Linguistics and TESOL. Equally important in the Department are the study of literature, cinema and culture, fundamentally important programs in language departments.

Research and Scholarship

Become familiar with the strong research and scholarship in the Department of Modern Languages. 

For example, Dr. Stephen Fafulas, Associate of Spanish and Linguistics, is an inaugural UM Faculty Laureate to build community partnerships to serve Latinx communities across the US South.

The Department of Modern Languages strives to educate our students about political systems and behavior at the local, state, national, and international levels. In addition to our regular courses, we:

  • Support students in study abroad 
  • Provide graduate students with conference travel, networking opportunities, and professional preparation
