About the Program
The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts offers the minor in Astronomy. Students learn to use fundamental laws of nature and the cosmos to discover new ideas in technology and new solutions to age-old problems.
The minor
- introduces the main facts about the solar system, stellar and galactic astronomy, and cosmology;
- develops some of the theory needed to understand the astrophysics of those systems; and
- teaches students observational techniques, including telescopes and astrophotography.
Studying astronomy leads to a unique and effective approach to problem-solving that many employers value.

Academic Requirements
A minor in Astronomy consists of 15 credit hours of courses.
- Astr 101: Descriptive Astronomy or Astr 103: Intro Astronomy of the Solar System
- Astr 204: Astronomy of Stars and Galaxies
- 3 courses at the 300-level or 400-level chosen from:
- Astr 325: Astrophysics
- Astr 436: Introduction to Cosmology
- Phys 317: Introduction to Modern Physics I
