Luca Bombelli

Professor of Physics and Astronomy

Luca Bombelli

Dr. Luca Bombelli is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Mississippi

Research Interests

Dr. Bombelli is a theoretical physicist with work in gravitational physics. He has worked on several classical aspects of gravity, studying properties of solutions of Einstein’s equations of General Relativity and the motion of bodies in curved spacetimes, including chaotic motion. Currently, most of his work is motivated by quantum gravity and the development of a theory of quantum spacetime.

Biography

Dr. Luca Bombelli earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1987. He was then a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Vienna, Austria (1987-1988); Research Associate at the University of Calgary, Canada (1989-1991); and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium (1991-1994).

Dr. Bombelli was an Assistant Professor at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA (1994-1995); Visiting Researcher at the University of Geneva, Switzerland (1995-1996); and Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Mississippi (1996-1999) before joining the regular faculty at UM. He served as Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 2016-2024.

He is a member of American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation, Sigma Xi, and Sigma Pi Sigma.
