Preferred Roommates

Students are able to select a preferred roommate in the Student Housing Portal. Roommates are never guaranteed, but our staff work hard to accommodate as many students as possible.

General Expectations

In addition to abiding by all university and student housing policies , residents are expected to establish and maintain a healthy relationship with their roommates.

Students should:

  • Know and abide by the Ole Miss Creed, university policies, and student housing policies.
  • Respect the right of others to read, study, and sleep free from undue interference.  Unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of  these rights.
  • Respect their roommate’s right of free access to the room.
  • Respect the rights of roommate(s) and other community members when entertaining guests.
  • Keep the building clean and tidy. This is everyone’s responsibility.
  • Respect their roommate’s belongings.
  • Respect the personal privacy of others.
  • Settle conflicts peacefully.  The Community Assistant is available and willing to assist residents in resolving conflicts.
  • Refrain from intimidating or causing physical or emotional harm to another.
  • Actively participate in resolving problems.

The University Of Mississippi Department Of Student Housing is committed to a safe and civil residential environment for all students and employees, free from harassment, intimidation, or bullying. “Harassment, intimidation, or bullying” means any intentional written, verbal, or physical act, when the intentional written, verbal, or physical act:

  • Physically harms a student or damages the student’s property;
  • Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education or wellbeing;
  • Is severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening residential environment; or
  • Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the residential community. Students found harassing, intimidating or bullying another individual or individuals for any reason may be subject to immediate eviction from the residence hall system, the university, or both.

Keys to Successful Roommate Relations

  1. Communicate – Roommates should sit down and talk about habits, preferences, moods, and values.  Even best friends may be surprised to find out new things about one another.
  2. Be understanding – Everyone has those days when everything seems to go wrong, and bad moods are a result.  Try to be understanding and help one another through the hard times.  Making it through the rough days builds better friendships.
  3. Establish “House” rules – To avoid misunderstandings, it’s important to establish ground rules regarding each other’s belongings, room neatness, phone use, and visitation.
  4. Give each other space – Togetherness is great, but sometimes roommates can have too much of a good thing.  Each roommate’s need for time alone should be considered.
  5. Be open-minded – Residents who don’t have a particular roommate in mind should be open to roommates who may be different than themselves.
