Why did you choose to attend UM?
Living in the same city all my life, I knew I wanted to go out-of-state for college, and preferably somewhere in the south. As I looked at colleges in the south, I found out that UM had a really good program for forensic chemistry. When I toured, all the ambassadors and professors were very welcoming and answered any questions I had. I also loved how beautiful the campus was and the fact that I would get to walk through the Grove everyday on the way to class.
When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?
I've always been really interested in the chemistry field, especially after taking classes like AP chem and doing experiments in labs. I also took an interest in watching crime shows and discovered the field of forensic science. I'm interested in studying toxicology and want to work in a crime lab, which is why I chose forensic chemistry. Both my math and biology minor fit really well into my degree plan as well.
What would you tell a high school student about your major?
Don't be scared to pursue a degree in STEM! Forensic chemistry is definitely a hard major, but if you enjoy it and are willing to put in work, it can be very rewarding! There are also lots of resources available to you. The university also has great research opportunities, and everyone wants to see you succeed.
Why is your department a special place?
I love the chemistry department because it's small enough that you can get to know your professors and aren't just in a huge lecture hall all the time. The department also provides great ways to get involved in research as early as your freshman year!
Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?
Dr. Ritchie's chemistry class! He has us do lots of interactive learning exercises which really helped me to understand the material. He also does little demonstrations for our class which are very interesting to watch and show how cool chemistry can be. His class has made me enjoy chemistry so much more and I genuinely looked forward to attending!
What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?
My most enjoyable moments have honestly been the small moments with my friends. College gets so busy, but I love the little breaks I get where I can just goof off with my friends and do random things like watching five minute crafts on loop, going to Cookout at two in the morning, or just sitting around and playing board games.
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
After I graduate, I want to either work in a state crime lab as a toxicologist or go to graduate school to pursue research in the forensic field.
What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and talk to people! Don't be afraid to try to get involved in something out of your comfort zone, you could end up loving it! Also, ask for help with classes when you need it! There are so many people who can help you out, don't let that go to waste!
