Why did you choose to attend UM?

Growing up attending football games and tailgating in the Grove, I have always been an Ole Miss fan, but I ultimately decided to study at the University of Mississippi because of the numerous opportunities for personal development and campus involvement I learned about while visiting. As an incoming freshman, I sought to pursue a college education that is both academically rigorous and intellectually rewarding. I have received this and so much more during my time at UM.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

I am an English major with an emphasis in creative writing and a political science major with an emphasis in law and courts. As a pre-law student, I initially chose English as my major because I desired to gain a strong background in critical thinking and comprehensive analysis for law school. I decided on a creative writing emphasis during my freshman year because I fell in love with creative writing while taking English classes. Through many literature and workshop classes, I have created countless works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction while obtaining valuable skills in preparation for law school. I began my freshman year with political science as my minor, but after taking introductory classes in international relations and American politics, I aspired to gain a deeper understanding of society, law, and politics by taking more political science classes and becoming a political science and English double major. All of the political science classes I have taken at UM have equipped me with valuable analytical skills and in-depth knowledge, thereby cultivating a solid foundation for my future legal career.

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

English is a very versatile major that serves as an avenue for a variety of exciting careers. English courses at UM are focused on equipping students with skills in writing, communication, critical thinking, and research that are valuable assets in every career. From pre-law and pre-med to education, publishing, journalism, and many more, English majors at UM are not confined to a select few post-graduate opportunities, but rather they are encouraged to pursue careers and graduate programs across an array of disciplines.

Political science at UM is a place for everyone, not just those interested in a political career. Offering emphases in developing countries, law and courts, and international conflict and cooperation in addition to campaigns and elections, majoring in political science allows students to take a wide range of classes that focus on diverse political institutions and organizations both domestically and internationally. Political science equips students with problem solving and analytical skills that extend into many careers both inside and outside of the governmental sphere.

Why is your department a special place?

Since my freshman year, I have had the pleasure of serving as a student worker for the Department of English. This role has given me the opportunity to engage with faculty and staff and take advantage of everything the English Department has to offer. From writing groups to open mic nights, the English Department at UM strives to foster intellectual growth, professional development, and a deep appreciation for literature and writing within its students.

The Political science department is a special place that encourages students to become knowledgeable and active participants in the political sphere. Small class sizes have allowed me to share knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions with my peers as well as connect with my professors. As a political science major, I have had the opportunity to conduct extensive research and gain valuable knowledge pertaining to political institutions and organizations.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you've taken that has had the most impact on you?

One of the many English classes that has had a positive impact on my educational journey is Professor Aimee Nezukumatathil’s American Environmental Literature class. This course encouraged me to strive towards environmental literacy and allowed me to understand the interconnectedness of social and environmental change. One of my favorite parts of her class was spending time closely studying, writing, and appreciating the plants and animals living around UM's beautiful campus.

What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?

During this past spring break, I had the incredible opportunity of studying abroad as part of the Fantasy Fiction in the UK course. Led by Professor Beth Spencer, this English class allowed me to create my own works of fantasy fiction throughout the spring semester in a workshop setting and travel to the UK during spring break to explore the craft and haunts of famous British fantasy writers. One of my most cherished memories from this trip is reading and writing poetry at Alnwick Castle.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I plan to attend law school and pursue a legal career in which I seek to enact positive change, advocate for social justice, and contribute to a fair and equitable legal system.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?

Although it is important to challenge yourself during your college years, remember that self-care and rest are essential. College can be mentally and emotionally demanding, so make sure to set time aside to prioritize your well-being to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Try discovering new hobbies or activities, such as painting or fitness classes, to take your mind off of school. By nurturing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, you will be able to navigate the challenges of college life more effectively.
