Why did you choose to attend UM?
It was an all-in-one package for me. UM provided the best financial plan for me while offering a wide variety of degree routes for my interests, giving me the freedom to branch out. And, of course, the campus is absolutely gorgeous, especially during the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom!
When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?
I chose my major right before my first semester began. Though not entirely sure what I wanted to do, I was fascinated with the strange nature of chemistry and physics, so I took a leap of faith and chose to study chemistry!
What would you tell a high school student about your major?
Chemistry and physics are very daunting, containing some of the most notoriously difficult courses in university. HOWEVER. What's seen on paper and told by others is only a fraction of the story. There is always something for everyone in the vast world of science. It's okay to be hesitant. Just trust yourself and explore what chemistry and physics have to offer, from simply synthesizing chemicals to using lasers! Enjoy what there is to it, and you will find something you'll love.
Why is your department a special place?
The UM chemistry department is full of passionate professors who deeply care about the interests of the students. They will be there every step of the way to help you learn, succeed, and most importantly of all, enjoy the process. They help make the department feel refreshing and welcoming to all, creating an environment worth returning to.
What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM?

- The chemistry degree is narrow enough to focus on select aspects of chemistry while also being wide enough to explore a variety of STEM topics.
- The department has one of the best student organizations called SMACS that engages students in research and learning.
- In Coulter Hall (the chemistry building), there is an in-built Starbucks!"
What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?
The 2024 Mississippi Day is one of my favorite moments at UM. There was a huge variety of activities and goodies for everyone, including games, demos, food, and items that we could take with us. It was a massive celebration of the school's academic studies and achievements.
What do you hope to do after you graduate?
My primary goal is to attend graduate school in pursuit of a PhD in Physical Chemistry. There, I hope to discover more career paths in the field of physical chemistry, strictly focusing on research.
What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self?
University is all about learning experiences, and making mistakes and failing are all part of the process. Don't feel discouraged and keep the positivity. At the end of the day is a new day waiting ahead, so keep moving forward, and know that your best effort is always enough.
