  • About

Ava is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She is a LSMAMP Scholar, the School Outreach Chair of the UM chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society, a member of the Black Student Union, and is a Juniorette’s Member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. On campus, she is a research intern in the Tanner lab where she records and presents research findings.

Why did you choose to attend UM?

I grew up in a small town only 30 minutes away from campus, so traveling to Oxford often wasn't foreign to me. It's a familiar town for me and I enjoy the fact that I can receive a quality education close enough to my home and family. While touring, I found how incredibly beautiful the campus is plus it's built in a circle which makes it easier to get around.

When and how did you choose your major(s)/minor(s)?

I chose my major as a senior in high school. I went back and forth with what I wanted to study in college all throughout high school. It wasn't until my spring semester of high school that I'd finally set my mind on a major. Our school district was a part of a Work-Based Learning program designed to develop students' leadership and employability skills by immersing them into real-life work experiences. During my time spent in the program, I shadowed undergraduate and graduate students in Dr. Eden Tanner's lab here in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry on campus. I enjoyed my mini research experience enough to stick with my major and continue my research experience throughout my freshman year of college.

What would you tell a high school student about your major?

If your high school provides dual enrollment courses, I would take advantage of any math courses offered! Especially College Algebra and Trigonometry as they are both important background courses for Calculus. As a Chemistry major pursing the Bachelor of Science pathway, I'm required to take Calculus I-IV. I took College Algebra in high school, but they didn't offer Trig which pushed me to work even harder in Calculus I. Thankfully the Math department offers Supplemental Instruction sessions that helped me push through my classes.

Why is your department a special place?

I found the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department to be a very welcoming and inviting place. I feel comfortable enough to ask any of my mentors for anything I may need.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

After graduation, I hope to attend graduate school and earn a doctorate degree in the chemistry field.

What is your go-to meal in Oxford?

Rasta Pasta from Venice Kitchen on the Square, but I've just been introduced to Uno Mas so I think it may be an upcoming favorite go-to of mine.

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you'd tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

Develop a strong study routine early in each semester, so that you won't feel like you're drowning in material. Also, sit near the front of class and develop connections with some of the people around you.
